Home

After 10 years, 20 Objects is transitioning to become the home for the work of Darwin Grosse. This work includes the following is supported by my patrons on Patreon.com.

The Art + Music + Technology Podcast

The Art+Music+Technology podcast, which began in 2013, interviews musicians, artists, software developers, hardware designers, academics and innovators about their work, their background and their vision in the world of art and technology. The podcast has included interviews with people like Herbie Hancock, Morton Subotnick, Tom Oberheim and Robert Rich. Text transcriptions are also available here.

The SCW Waveform Editor

The SCW Editor, used to create single-cycle waveforms (and .WAV files containing these waveforms) is available at this location. Use the "Go to the editor!" link to begin creating and editing your own waveforms, or and use the Randomize button to get odd, buzzy waveforms you might never have come up with!

The Modular Synthesizer Mastery Books

The Modular Synthesizer Mastery book series takes a unique approach to learning about modular synthesizers, pairing up different types of modules to learn synthesis in a more organic way. Each book features a number of exercises that are meant to get the player used to the sound and feel of their own system, and works on helping to 'hear' the synthesizer as an instrument.

The series is available on Amazon as individual Kindle books. You can check them out through this link.

Cycling '74's Max

I've been a long-time user of Cycling '74's Max/MSP software, and in 2009 - as part of my Master Degree efforts at University of Denver - I put together an example curriculum for teaching/learning Max. It was based off an idea I heard passed around about building your knowledge off of 20 primary Max objects. It sounded like a good idea, so I gave it a swing.

The result ended up as 20 Objects, which is also were this site got its name. If you want to check out the curriculum, you can review it here: http://darwingrosse.com/20Objects/. There are plenty of ways to learn Max - maybe this one will work for you?

I also have a Max blog I occasionally post to - generally with answers to questions I find on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. You can check it out at the MaxHints site.

The ArdCore Module

The ArdCore module was, in its time, a radical idea: create a digital module that didn't really do anything - it was a palette for you to place your dream into action. Some people loved it and embraced it, but it really didn't go over very well in the 5u/Moog space, and that kind of depressed me.

Then Dan Snazelle came along and made it into a Eurorack module and it really got some legs. A number of people created amazing Arduino sketches that run inside the module, and it remains an important part of many people's Eurorack systems.

The ArdCore pages provide historical information on the project as well as building instruction for anyone that still has some circuit boards laying around.

Music Releases

I've been making music for ages, but have seldom released any. Some of it was because I was never 'pursued' by a label, but also because I really focused on liver performance and technical exploration. As a result, I'm just now starting to put together some releases of my work.

My first release was "The Means Of Production", a recording of a live performance using a large-format (5u) modular system. This was during a time when you didn't hear much about modulars in live performance, so it was kind of unique. Things have changed since then...

The second release is "Infernal Data Machine", a collection of tracks using my now infamous IDM-5 patch. This patch, originally created as a testbed for the jit.cellblock Max object, is now one of the first things that people will convert to any new technology that we (at Cycling '74) create. I mean, if someone else doesn't do it, I will!

My third release is "2600.repast", recordings of select Arp 2600 work sessions recorded and released in album format. While not originally planned as an album release, this has become another favorite listen for me - and anytime I like my own work, it's a win for me!

I have other releases with other people, including live recordings with THHG (Taylor-Hamer-Hendrickson-Grosse), Gregory Taylor (on Palace of Lights) and other folks. Expect a fair amount more in the future!

Blogs and Other Words

I've been writing blog-like stuff for ages - going back to the original Creative Synth site, through blogging for O'Reilly Media, blogging for Cycling '74 and various other audio/music/tech streams.

At this point, all of my blog posting is happening on my Patreon site. You can find older writing on Modular stuff at the AlllThingsModular blog, and older Max stuff (especially stuff that I wanted hanging around for a while...) at the MaxHints blog

Much fun to be had reading all that!
